Good Prevails

“All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing…”
–Edmund Burke
The survivors and families of the victims of metro-Detroit cancer doctor, Dr. Farid Fata, have proven Burke’s quote to be inarguable. They are fighting for ‘good’.
Dr. Farid Fata pleaded guilty to over-treating hundreds of patients with toxic levels of chemotherapy, including treating several people who never had cancer. I’m told some people lost their houses, their jobs, their trust, their security. Nearly everyone he over-treated lost their health.
Others lost loved ones.
This past Tuesday, the State of Michigan honored the group with the Crime Victims Advocate Award in Lansing as a part of the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 10-16).
I’m so proud of this group.
They are gritty, spirited, passionate, united. They fight so hard for their fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons killed by Fata’s mistreatment.
They’ve bonded together for support groups, lantern lightings, and trips to Lansing to change Michigan laws to protect patients against doctors who don’t have their best interest at heart.
I’ve come to care a lot about this group of people–not only because they have introduced me to some of the most incredible examples of the human spirit I’ve ever witnessed–but also because so many of them took a chance on me as a young reporter and shared their stories with me nonetheless.
I’m honored to be telling the stories of this “Army of One”–as they so often call themselves. I can’t wait to see what they achieve.
You can see one of their stories here.
